The ending that was nauseating The ending of How I Met Your Mother is portrayed as a twist ending and one that contradicted the character development of the show to deliver an ending that the writers that had set in stone years ago. They built a mountain and had dropped us right from the cliff, we were hurt so badly by it we weren't able to recover from it and have been scarred since. The question now is were they planning it and we didn't realise it or they did it just so abruptly we fell from the cliff and haven't been able to recover from it ever since.  Our instinct is going to be thinking they had intended to get us fall off the cliff without us noticing, but thinking back I have come to the realization they had intended to do this to us all along.
